RIP Paul Motian, 1913-2011
Here’s a picture of Paul Motian with the great Bill Evans and Scott LaFaro. Paul is on the right. I was able to see Paul in Mark Turner’s group at The Village Vanguard last November and was profoundly affected by their music. I left the Vanguard that night shaken, yet inspired. To me, they were the only modern jazz group to create the same spiritual feeling projected by John Coltrane’s two groups in the 1960s. I hoped to see the band again during their stint at theĀ VanguardĀ this past summer, but missed them due to a last minute scheduling change of a recording session in Los Angeles. At the time I was dissapointed, but simply vowed to see them the next time they were in town. Sadly, Paul passed away today, November 22, 2011. I am crushed that I will never get to see that same great band again, yet grateful I was able to see Paul with the band before he passed. Their single set at the Vanguard last year remains the most powerful musical event I have witnessed and continues to inspire me to pursue jazz music no matter what discourages me.
