ourpresidents:

Shortly after noon on November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated as he rode in a motorcade through Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas, Texas.
Crowds of excited people had lined the streets to wave to the Kennedys that afternoon.  The Presidential procession traveled along a ten-mile route that wound through downtown Dallas on the way to the Trade Mart where the President was scheduled to speak at a luncheon.
The car turned off of Main Street at Dealey Plaza around 12:30 p.m.  As it was passing the Texas School Book Depository, gunfire suddenly reverberated in the plaza.  Read more.
This view is of the Presidential motorcade on Main Street that November afternoon.

Yet another post about death on my blog. I apologize to seem so morbid. Both posts are out of respect and to preserve their cultural significance. If you are unaware, President Kennedy was assassinated on November 22 in 1963, 48 years ago today by Lee Harvey Oswald.

RIP Paul Motian, 1913-2011
Here’s a picture of Paul Motian with the great Bill Evans and Scott LaFaro. Paul is on the right. I was able to see Paul in Mark Turner’s group at The Village Vanguard last November and was profoundly affected by their music. I left the Vanguard that night shaken, yet inspired. To me, they were the only modern jazz group to create the same spiritual feeling projected by John Coltrane’s two groups in the 1960s. I hoped to see the band again during their stint at the Vanguard this past summer, but missed them due to a last minute scheduling change of a recording session in Los Angeles. At the time I was dissapointed, but simply vowed to see them the next time they were in town. Sadly, Paul passed away today, November 22, 2011. I am crushed that I will never get to see that same great band again, yet grateful I was able to see Paul with the band before he passed. Their single set at the Vanguard last year remains the most powerful musical event I have witnessed and continues to inspire me to pursue jazz music no matter what discourages me.
