John Coltrane - Live At The Village Vanguard, 1962

John Coltrane - soprano saxophone / tenor saxophone

Eric Dolphy - bass clarinet

McCoy Tyner - piano

Reggie Workman / Jimmy Garrison - bass

Elvin Jones - drums

When I first started studying jazz seriously my teacher gave me different records to listen to every week. In just the first few weeks of my lessons I was given this record. Trane’s improvisational impetus blew me away as did the momentum of Jimmy Garrison and Elvin Jones. I’d listen to the full 13-minute take of “Chasin’ the Trane” over and over, listening hard and desperately trying to keep the 12-bar blues form in my head as Trane stretched farther and farther out harmonically and thematically. His concept was so far beyond anything I had experienced musically at that point in my life. Even though I was struggling to comprehend the unfamiliar and sophisticated language of Trane’s improvising I was still drawn to it.

Give this record a listen if you have the time. I highly doubt you will regret it.

Bill Evans, Scott Lafaro, and Paul Motian in the back room of the Village Vanguard. A great jazz trio.

A few photos of the interior of the Village Vanguard from NPR’s A Blog Supreme. I had the pleasure of seeing Roy Hargrove and his Quintet here a few years ago and can’t wait to go back.

RIP Paul Motian, 1913-2011
Here’s a picture of Paul Motian with the great Bill Evans and Scott LaFaro. Paul is on the right. I was able to see Paul in Mark Turner’s group at The Village Vanguard last November and was profoundly affected by their music. I left the Vanguard that night shaken, yet inspired. To me, they were the only modern jazz group to create the same spiritual feeling projected by John Coltrane’s two groups in the 1960s. I hoped to see the band again during their stint at the Vanguard this past summer, but missed them due to a last minute scheduling change of a recording session in Los Angeles. At the time I was dissapointed, but simply vowed to see them the next time they were in town. Sadly, Paul passed away today, November 22, 2011. I am crushed that I will never get to see that same great band again, yet grateful I was able to see Paul with the band before he passed. Their single set at the Vanguard last year remains the most powerful musical event I have witnessed and continues to inspire me to pursue jazz music no matter what discourages me.
